The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on April 1 that it has updated its Driver Safety Course, offering drivers the opportunity to reduce up to 50 points from their driving record. The changes are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen road safety and encourage responsible behavior among drivers.

The update is intended to improve preventive measures within the traffic system, aiming for safer roads nationwide. According to Supreme Decree No. 001-2026-MTC, which took effect following its publication on January 11, the regulation modifies the System for Controlling Driving Licenses by Points.

Under the new rules, drivers can now choose between two course formats: a virtual option that allows for a reduction of up to 40 points and an in-person format offering a reduction of up to 50 points. The in-person course is more academically demanding with supervised evaluations and longer hours compared to previous versions that allowed only a maximum deduction of 30 points.

A key addition in the updated curriculum is an extra academic hour titled “Emotional Self-Regulation and Safe Decision Making.” This module aims at helping drivers manage stress, control impulsive reactions, and make responsible decisions behind the wheel.

The program targets drivers who have accumulated fewer than 100 infraction points and do not currently face license suspension or cancellation. Classes are held Monday through Friday during morning and afternoon sessions. Registration is available online via MTC’s portal for Class A drivers or through the Virtual Classroom for Class B drivers. Participants may select either format according to their needs.

Further information about this initiative can be found on the National Road Safety Observatory website or by contacting MTC through official digital channels.
