The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on March 23 that it will intervene in 70 kilometers of critical sections along the Los Libertadores road between San Clemente and Ayacucho. The action follows the ministry’s declaration of a state of emergency for this important transportation corridor.
The intervention aims to restore safe transit for drivers and the general public. Heavy machinery is being mobilized immediately, with traffic flow expected to be restricted but not completely halted during repairs, according to Vice Minister of Transport Juan del Carmen Haro.
Haro said that these works, funded by the MTC and carried out by Provías Nacional, are designed to ensure safety along the route. He emphasized that restoring transitability is a priority for both transport operators and citizens who rely on this corridor.
The emergency declaration was issued as part of agreements reached in recent meetings with the Confederation of Land Transporters of Peru. These discussions have taken place since early March and have focused on issues such as fuel excise taxes, price stabilization funds, and immediate actions for Los Libertadores road.
Under Ministerial Resolution No. 155-2026-MTC/01.02, the state of emergency covers the section from Empalme PE-1S (San Clemente) to Empalme PE-3S (Ayacucho). The resolution will remain in effect for 180 calendar days to allow time for infrastructure recovery efforts.
With this measure, MTC—through Provías Nacional and its Directorate General for Transport Project Programs—will carry out all necessary interventions. Priority will be given to segments requiring immediate attention so that land transport can resume under improved conditions.
