The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on April 1 the signing of a contract for the construction of the new San Juan de Marcona Port Terminal in Ica, with an investment totaling $405 million.
According to the ministry, this project is expected to benefit 29 provinces and 280 districts across the regions of Apurímac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Ica, and Cusco. The initiative aims to strengthen logistics and economic development in southern Peru by improving port infrastructure.
The planned terminal will include two docks, three berths, and specialized equipment for bulk cargo, general cargo, and containers. The MTC said these features will help speed up port operations and improve transport connections in the region.
Developed as a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), the project covers design, financing, construction, operation, and maintenance. Once operational, it is expected to become Peru’s third most important port after Callao and Chancay. The ministry said this would boost foreign trade competitiveness.
The concession agreement was signed with Sociedad Concesionaria San Juan Port. During its first five years of operation, about 1,500 direct and indirect jobs are projected to be created at the terminal. A social fund estimated at nearly S/290 million will also be established to support projects aimed at improving living conditions for nearby communities.
With this development step completed, MTC officials say they remain committed to promoting modern port infrastructure that encourages investment opportunities throughout Peru.
