The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on Apr. 28 that the Superintendence of Land Transport of People, Cargo and Goods (Sutran) detected and seized a total of 46 suspected fake license plates from January to April this year. The ministry said these findings were the result of joint operations targeting unauthorized transport in various regions.

According to the ministry, these interventions took place in nine out of twenty-two decentralized units as part of ongoing efforts to address informality and reduce risks on national roads. The results show that Puno had the highest number with 19 cases, followed by Arequipa with 10, Tumbes with five, Ica with four, La Libertad with three, Lima with two, Piura with one, Lambayeque with one, and San Martín also reporting one case.

After detection, all seized plates are sent to the Automotive Association of Peru for verification. The ministry explained that these retained plates lack security holograms and do not meet technical specifications set out in Supreme Decree No. 017-2008-MTC. Many were made from unauthorized materials such as cardboard or plastic to mimic legality and evade regulatory controls.

Cases identified are referred to Sutran’s Public Prosecutor’s Office for legal action against those responsible. “In this way, MTC through Sutran continues intensifying control operations nationwide aiming to prevent crimes, reduce informality and strengthen road safety for all citizens,” said the ministry.

The Ministry of Transport and Communications supports cultural and social wellbeing by improving national connectivity through enhanced infrastructure according to its official website. It operates service centers like MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur to increase public access according to its official website, functions within Peru’s executive branch overseeing transport regulation according to its official website, delivers inclusive services for national integration according to its official website, operates under ministerial guidance according to its official website, serves communities throughout Peru according to its official website, manages infrastructure since beginning operations in 1969 according to its official website.
