The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on April 24 that more than 13,600 speeding violations were recorded across Peru between January 1 and April 12, 2026. The ministry said these cases were identified through enforcement operations carried out by the Superintendence of Land Transport of People, Cargo and Goods (Sutran) on the National Road Network.
According to the ministry, this measure is part of efforts to improve road safety and promote responsible driving. Excessive speed remains a major concern for authorities as it increases the risk of traffic accidents.
The violations were detected using electronic devices known as cinemometers that measure vehicle speed in real time at strategic points throughout the country. Lima registered the highest number with more than 5,657 cases, followed by La Libertad with 3,787 and Junín with 1,712. Of all infractions recorded during this period, private automobiles accounted for about 91 percent.
Under national regulations, excessive speed is classified as a very serious infraction (code M20). Penalties can range from fines equal to between eighteen percent and fifty percent of a Tax Unit (UIT), along with points added to drivers’ records or possible license suspension for repeat offenses.
Drivers can check if they have been fined for speeding by accessing Sutran’s online platform “Papeletas de Infracción por Cinemómetros” using their vehicle’s license plate number.
