The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) said on March 24 that the installation of two modular bridges on the Variante de Uchumayo is expected to be completed by the end of March, allowing vehicles to resume passage. The MTC ordered these temporary structures after damage was reported at the Uchumayo bridge, located at kilometer 24+850 in sector 3 Arequipa – Yura.

The installation involves transporting metal structures from Ancón district in Lima to Arequipa, a process that began on March 10. On March 15, Covisur, the concessionaire company, started assembling and mounting the two modular bridges, each measuring just over sixty meters.

Additional work has included building foundations and abutments for the new bridges. The project is currently about sixty-five percent complete.

Officials say reopening this route will restore vehicle traffic between Uchumayo and Yura. For now, drivers are using an alternate route via Cerro Verde and AR-115. According to authorities, these efforts are part of a coordinated response between MTC and Covisur to maintain transit flow while a permanent technical solution for the damaged bridge is developed.

The ministry said it continues working with Covisur and inspecting progress regularly in order “to restore vehicular circulation and guarantee the safety of thousands of citizens.”
