The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on May 5 that unauthorized vehicles using the exclusive lane of the Metropolitano will face a fine of S/ 440, which equals 8% of one Tax Unit, as well as an addition of 20 points to the driver’s record.
This measure aims to ensure road safety and maintain efficient operation of public transport. The presence of private vehicles in these lanes can disrupt service flow and endanger both passengers and operators.
According to current regulations, only emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, and police patrols are permitted in this lane—and only when responding to verified emergencies with audible and visual signals activated. The Ministry said it is intensifying inspections throughout the city in coordination with the National Police to sanction violators and encourage respect for traffic laws.
The Ministry emphasized that improper use of exclusive lanes not only constitutes a legal offense but may also cause traffic accidents or delays for thousands who rely daily on the Metropolitano system. “El Ministerio de Transportes y Comunicaciones reafirma su compromiso de seguir fortaleciendo la seguridad vial, promover el respeto a las normas de tránsito y garantizar un sistema de transporte público más seguro, ordenado y eficiente para todos los ciudadanos,” said ministry officials.
The Ministry supports cultural and social wellbeing by improving national connectivity through enhanced infrastructure; it operates service centers like MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur; functions under Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport policy; delivers safe, sustainable services for national integration; serves communities across Peru; and operates under ministerial guidance—all according to the official website.
