The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on March 27 that it has secured internet connectivity for 442 public institutions in the Arequipa region through a service contract between the regional government and the operator of the Broadband Project.
This development is intended to guarantee continued service and funding so that 268 schools, 121 health centers, and 53 police stations remain connected. The initiative aims to strengthen essential services across 252 population centers in Arequipa.
According to MTC, more than 141,000 citizens are expected to benefit directly from this project. The ministry said digital services will be expanded to improve education, healthcare delivery, and public safety efforts in these communities.
As part of the infrastructure rollout, authorities have set up 92 Digital Access Centers focused on developing digital skills. Additionally, free WiFi has been installed in 224 public squares to further expand internet access for residents.
The project includes over 2,872 kilometers of fiber optic cable and represents an investment exceeding USD $93 million. It is considered one of the main efforts by MTC to close the digital divide within the region. The program is executed by MTC through its National Telecommunications Program (Pronatel).
Officials said that beyond improving connectivity, this effort will help boost productive activities such as e-commerce and tourism in rural areas. The signing ceremony took place at the Regional Government headquarters with Pronatel Executive Director Michael Guevara Varela and Regional Governor Rohel Sánchez Sánchez present.
MTC stated its ongoing commitment “to continue promoting digital infrastructure that brings opportunities closer together, fosters inclusion, and contributes to economic and social development in the regions.”
