The Ministry of Transport and Communications, led by Minister Aldo Prieto Barrera, held a meeting with Congressman Juan Carlos Mori Celis to review infrastructure projects in the Loreto region, according to a March 24 announcement. The discussion focused on advancing transportation development in the province of Alto Amazonas.

The meeting addressed several key issues, including the current status of Yurimaguas airport. The Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics stated that the signing for land transfer to rehabilitate Yurimaguas airport will take place on March 31. This rehabilitation will include improvements to the runway, aircraft platform, and perimeter fencing.

Officials also discussed progress toward establishing a decentralized unit of SUTRAN (Superintendence of Land Transport for People, Cargo and Goods) in Alto Amazonas. This initiative aims to strengthen oversight of heavy cargo transport and improve traffic management in this strategic area. SUTRAN reported ongoing meetings to make this goal operational soon.

Additionally, coordination efforts between various government sectors—including Provias Nacional from MTC, the Ministry of Defense through the Peruvian Army, and the Regional Government of Loreto—were reviewed as part of plans to improve transit along an important route.

The group also evaluated a project intended to enhance interurban road service along section SM-804 Shamboyacu in Picota province. According to Provias Descentralizado, technical documentation is under review; once it meets sector standards, steps will be taken with MEF (Ministry of Economy and Finance) for funding.

Authorities agreed on “the importance of strengthening inter-institutional coordination to accelerate project execution that meets population needs.”
