The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on April 27 that Minister Aldo Prieto Barrera met with Estrella Castañeda de Levinsky, representative of Gilat Networks Perú S.A., and international representatives from the International Telecommunication Union to promote digital connectivity initiatives in Peru, focusing on education.
The meeting addressed the scope of Project Giga, a global initiative led by UNICEF and the International Telecommunication Union aiming to connect every school worldwide to the internet by 2030. The project involves real-time mapping of school connectivity, analysis of infrastructure and public policy, as well as efficient financing and contracting mechanisms.
During discussions, participants considered launching a pilot project in Peru to improve connectivity at educational institutions using innovative technology solutions for remote areas. The capacity-building component was also highlighted as essential for strengthening skills among government officials and key stakeholders to ensure sustainability.
Prieto Barrera said that “these strategic alliances with international organizations and the private sector are fundamental for closing the digital divide and strengthening equitable access to telecommunications services.” International representatives responded by saying that cooperation is crucial for implementing sustainable solutions that can expand connectivity and create more development opportunities.
Specialists from the Giga program joined remotely to provide technical details about implementation strategies and global benefits.
