The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on Apr. 28 that specialized technical teams have been deployed to the Copuma sector, also known as Garganta del Diablo between Áncash and Huánuco, to carry out geological and topographic assessments aimed at accelerating road recovery and restoring transit.
These efforts come after an emergency was declared in the area due to damage affecting connectivity. The MTC said that field inspections included evaluations of rock type, slope stability, blasting design, drilling, and road conditions. The ministry stated these assessments will help define the most appropriate technical measures for a safe intervention.
For data collection, technologies such as drones, scanners, and total stations were used to gather precise information about local conditions. This information is described as key for reinforcing ongoing intensive work in the affected sector. The studies will also support preparing terms of reference for hiring a company to intensify reconstruction efforts with strict safety criteria.
Meanwhile, priority actions continue in parallel: implementing signage and safety measures at the work site as well as controlled drilling and blasting operations for road rebuilding. A pedestrian passage remains open with scheduled hours for transporting goods while these works progress.
The MTC confirmed its commitment to continue working permanently until full transit is restored along this strategic corridor. The ministry operates under ministerial guidance according to its official website.
