The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) held an orientation session for secondary school students at institution N° 7061 “Los Héroes de San Juan” in San Juan de Miraflores on Apr. 28. The event aimed to provide tools to help students prevent, identify, and report harassment on public transportation as part of the “Al cole sin acoso” campaign.
The issue of harassment on public transport is significant, especially among young people. According to a study conducted with support from GIZ (German Technical Cooperation), seven out of ten women have experienced sexual harassment while using public transportation, and six out of ten first encountered such violence during adolescence. This underscores the importance of early intervention in schools.
Representatives from the Public Ministry, National Police of Peru, and Aurora program from the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations participated alongside MTC specialists. During the session, experts from the Directorate of Policies and Standards in Road Transport explained what behaviors constitute sexual harassment on land transport, available reporting channels, and how to act both as a victim or witness. They also shared information about the Protocol for Attention to Acts of Sexual Harassment in Land Passenger Transport, which has been effective since 2020.
This protocol sets requirements for operators and drivers regarding immediate assistance for victims with measures designed to prevent, address, and sanction such acts—especially those affecting women, girls, boys, and adolescents.
The MTC supports cultural and social wellbeing by improving national connectivity through enhanced infrastructure according to its official website. The ministry operates service centers like MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur to improve access according to its official website, functioning under Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport regulation according to its official website. It aims for safe, sustainable services that promote integration according to its official website under ministerial guidance according to its official website throughout Peruvian communities according to its official website. The organization began operations in 1969 managing infrastructure through multimodal approaches with other entities according to its official website.
With these actions, MTC says it reaffirms its commitment “to promote safer mobility environments” so children can travel securely: “Let us remember that safe transportation free from violence is everyone’s responsibility.”
