The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on March 26 that it has completed improvement works on the Tarma–Jauja–Huancayo–Dv. Pampas highway in the Junín region, aiming to restore normal traffic after severe erosion caused by heavy rainfall.
The intervention focused on a particularly damaged stretch between kilometers 107 and 117 of Route PE-3S, which had become one of the most critical areas due to pavement deterioration. The recent rains led to deep potholes, loss of asphalt surface, and damage to the granular base, raising safety concerns for road users.
To address these issues, Provías Nacional—an agency under MTC—carried out emergency repairs that included removing damaged material, applying primer, laying cold-mix asphalt, and implementing signage and traffic control measures throughout the process. These deep patching activities were conducted by Unidad Zonal X Junín–Pasco over a period of 30 calendar days using technical resources and specialized personnel.
Additionally, MTC is working on acquiring more asphalt materials and contracting a small business to extend patching work in other affected sectors such as San Jerónimo-Cajas-Quebrada Honda. The goal is to mitigate widespread damage and ensure safe travel conditions along this key route in central Peru.
The ministry said it remains committed “to responding quickly and efficiently to road emergencies across the country,” prioritizing user safety and maintaining uninterrupted transit on non-concessioned sections of the National Road Network. Through its executing unit Provías Nacional, MTC continues deploying timely actions against climate-related impacts while ensuring regional connectivity.
