The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), led by Minister Aldo Martín Prieto Barrera, announced on March 31 the signing of a land delivery agreement with Consorcio Argos for the rehabilitation of Yurimaguas airport. This marks the start of a significant infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity in Peru’s Amazon region.
The initiative is expected to benefit more than 114,000 residents in Yurimaguas and surrounding areas by upgrading key airport facilities. The scheduled works are set to begin in May and involve an investment exceeding S/ 92 million.
The project includes structural improvements to the runway, taxiways, and apron, which will allow the terminal to accommodate aircraft carrying between 80 and 90 passengers. This expansion is intended to increase current seat capacity at the airport.
Engineering solutions tailored for jungle conditions will also be implemented as part of this effort. A high-capacity drainage system is planned to ensure continued operations during heavy rainfall typical in the Amazon region.
During the ceremony, Prieto Barrera said that this work is part of a broader strategy to strengthen connectivity throughout Loreto. The MTC’s portfolio includes projects such as building the Bellavista–Mazán–El Estrecho highway, installing modular bridges in Maynas province, and expanding Iquitos International Airport.
Prieto Barrera also said that approximately S/ 212 million has been allocated for infrastructure works in Loreto for 2026, reaffirming government efforts to address long-standing gaps in Amazonia development.
With these interventions, MTC aims to position Yurimaguas as a strategic point within Peru’s national logistics system while promoting greater economic and social opportunities for local communities.
