The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on March 20 the awarding of contracts for several maintenance projects on the Panamericana Norte highway, as well as new steps to advance key infrastructure works such as the Vía Evitamiento in the Tumbes region. These initiatives aim to improve road infrastructure in northern Peru, ensuring safer and more efficient travel for citizens and freight transport.
The announcement follows a technical meeting between Ana Reátegui Napurí, head of the Cabinet of Advisors at MTC; technical teams from Provías Nacional (PVN) and Provías Descentralizado (PVD); and specialists from the Regional Government of Tumbes. The meeting addressed priority requests for the region, focusing on progress for the Vía Evitamiento, Puente Tumbes, the Sullana – Aguas Verdes section, and the Sullana – Tumbes route.
Provías Nacional confirmed that contracts have been awarded for maintenance work on Puente Tumbes with an investment exceeding 2 million soles. For the Sullana – Aguas Verdes stretch of Panamericana Norte, an initial allocation of 3 million soles will fund emergency activities and targeted repairs to ensure road usability through April. A subsequent process under emergency provisions will be launched to carry out further maintenance in critical areas, with a budget exceeding 20 million soles dedicated to asphalt works.
Regarding Vía Evitamiento, officials said final studies for its technical dossier are underway. To speed up this process, Provías Nacional will form a multisectoral working group with district mayors to complete quarry identification. For the Sullana – Tumbes segment known as ‘Ruta del Sol,’ MTC will coordinate with national authorities to prioritize budget allocation and guarantee project execution.
The Ministry said it remains committed to working in a decentralized manner alongside regional authorities to close infrastructure gaps across Peru.
