The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on Apr. 8 the launch of a new Monitoring and Operational Control Center for the Santa Catalina transport company, aimed at improving safety for both passengers and drivers. The initiative is a joint effort between public and private sectors to address public security concerns.

This development is significant as it introduces advanced technology to enhance protection in public transportation, supporting national efforts to ensure safer travel for citizens. The system allows constant, real-time monitoring of routes 1108 “A”, 1059 “B” and 1057 “C”, with panic buttons installed near drivers’ steering wheels. When pressed during emergencies, these devices send alerts directly to the National Police Emergency Center (Central de Emergencias 105), ensuring rapid police intervention.

The event was attended by Aldo Prieto Barrera, Minister of Transport and Communications; José Zapata Morante, Minister of the Interior; Óscar Arriola Delgado, Commander General of the National Police; David Hernández Salazar, Executive President of ATU; and Miguel Hualpa Antesala, General Manager of Santa Catalina. Authorities toured the control center facilities and tested a vehicle equipped with the panic button system.

“The Centro de Monitoreo y Control Operativo que hoy entra en funcionamiento representa una respuesta concreta frente a la amenaza de la delincuencia. Se trata de una herramienta tecnológica para proteger la vida, el trabajo y la seguridad de quienes hacen posible el transporte público,” said Prieto Barrera.

In addition to this technological measure, MTC supports operators through its ASYSTE program managed by ATU. This strategy offers specialized support services including legal assistance and safe reporting channels for victims of crimes such as extortion.

The Ministry works under its minister’s guidance according to its official website, overseeing Peru’s transport and communications sector as part of the executive branch according to its official website. It manages infrastructure projects that promote connectivity using multimodal approaches since beginning operations in 1969 according to its official website. Service centers like MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur have been established by MTC to improve access for citizens according to its official website.

Looking ahead, MTC says it will continue advancing inclusive infrastructure projects designed for national integration while serving communities across Peru according to its official website.
