The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on March 27 the strengthening of air connectivity between Chiclayo and Panama, as part of the government’s open skies policy aimed at increasing flight opportunities to and from regions in Peru.

This development follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between aeronautical authorities from both countries. The agreement allows for an increase in flight offerings and strengthens the connection with Panama, which is described as one of the main air hubs in the region.

According to MTC, this agreement ensures continued operations to Chiclayo while also opening up possibilities for evaluating new international routes from other cities in Peru. This would allow more Peruvians direct access to international markets without needing to travel through Lima.

The Directorate General of Civil Aeronautics (DGAC) said that such agreements encourage greater competition among airlines, resulting in improved services, more frequent flights, and more competitive fares. These changes are expected to benefit passengers directly and boost regional economic activity.

For Lambayeque region and northern Peru, increased connectivity is seen as a strategic opportunity to promote tourism, strengthen trade ties, attract investment, welcome visitors more easily, and provide better access for Peruvian products into new international markets.

These actions are part of MTC’s broader commercial aviation policy designed to create a more competitive, decentralized, and integrated aeronautical system that supports economic and social development across regions. The ministry said it remains committed to promoting further international agreements that expand air connectivity throughout the country.
