The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on March 20 that it will begin steps to implement a project aimed at expanding and modernizing Line 1 of the Lima Metro, with an estimated investment of $3.8 billion.
The project is expected to benefit more than 3.4 million users in districts including El Agustino, La Victoria, San Borja, San Juan de Lurigancho, San Juan de Miraflores, San Luis, Santiago de Surco, Surquillo, Villa El Salvador, and Villa María del Triunfo.
Plans for the expansion include improvements to stations and access points to increase capacity, comprehensive reinforcement of the viaduct, renewal of railway tracks and switches, modernization of energy systems, signaling and railway automation systems, passenger control systems, telecommunications and video surveillance. The initiative also involves acquiring higher-capacity trains and expanding maintenance depots and workshops.
According to the MTC statement, these upgrades aim to reduce waiting and travel times for passengers while improving safety and encouraging greater use of public transportation at lower costs for users. The project will also strengthen connections with Metro Line 2 and the Metropolitano system in order to create a more integrated transport network in Lima and Callao.
Since its inauguration 14 years ago, Line 1 has transported over 1.6 billion passengers across 11 districts in Metropolitan Lima using a fleet of 44 trains. It currently serves more than 600 thousand daily users. The operation has helped reduce congestion on other forms of transport and supported economic activity in its area of influence.
The MTC said it remains committed to modernizing public transportation services in Peru by offering efficient and accessible options that promote orderly urban mobility.
