Javier Vela, a resident of Pucallpa, marked ten years of healthy life after receiving a kidney transplant, according to a March 15 announcement. Vela had waited more than a decade for the procedure due to end-stage chronic renal failure and underwent hemodialysis while hoping for a donor.
The story highlights the ongoing need for organ donation in Peru. The impact of organ donation extends beyond individual patients, affecting entire families who endure uncertainty during the wait for transplants.
Vela said that family support and strict adherence to medical advice have been crucial to his recovery. “Al donar un órgano no solo se ayuda a un paciente, sino a toda la familia que sufre en el proceso,” he said. “Estoy agradecido con mi donante por este renacer. Donar es un acto de bondad; imaginen la felicidad de tantas familias si lograran recibir un órgano como yo”.
He now seeks to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation, emphasizing that one decision can restore hope to many households.
According to the Dirección General de Donaciones, Trasplantes y Banco de Sangre (DIGDOT), kidneys remain among the most needed organs in Peru, with more than 800 people currently awaiting transplants.
