The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) announced on Apr. 7 that the supply of food to Lima’s wholesale markets surpassed 11,000 tons, with increased availability of products such as potatoes, beans, tomatoes, mandarins, oranges and avocados for both traders and consumers.

This level of supply is significant for ensuring stable access to essential foods in the capital. The ministry reported that a total of 11,757 tons were delivered between the Gran Mercado Mayorista de Lima (GMML) and the Mercado Mayorista de Frutas No. 2 in La Victoria.

At GMML alone, 9,071 tons of legumes, vegetables and tubers arrived—a figure MIDAGRI said was up by 12.5% compared to the previous four Wednesdays. Potato deliveries reached 3,188 tons at this market—16.5% higher than recent averages—with high stock levels noted overall. Key prices included carrots at S/0.88 per kilogram and zapallo macre squash at S/1.38 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, Mercado de Frutas No.2 received 2,686 tons of fruit—an increase of about five percent from recent Tuesdays—with watermelon selling at S/0.83 per kilogram and other fruits like melons and bananas also available at low prices.

Poultry supplies were described as sufficient for retail demand; live chicken was priced at an average S/8.10 per kilogram while eggs sold for S/5.93 per kilogram in distribution centers across Lima.

To help citizens monitor market trends more easily, MIDAGRI has launched a special online platform offering updated information on product prices in both wholesale markets and selected retail outlets throughout the city (see platform).

The Ministry promotes cultural and social well-being through rural inclusion efforts as part of its mission according to its official website. It operates from its central headquarters in Jesús María with additional offices across Peru according to the official website. The Ministry functions within Peru’s Executive Branch according to the official website.

MIDAGRI advances strategies supporting sustainable agricultural development alongside food security programs nationwide according to its official website. Its work includes serving agricultural producers throughout Peru according to the official website, issuing regulations that support sustainable agriculture according to its official website, and overseeing agrarian development policies since being established by legislation in 2020 according to its official website.
