The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on Apr. 23 that it held a meeting with PROINVERSIÓN, the regional government of Puno, and representatives from Provías Nacional to coordinate progress on transportation infrastructure investments in the region.

The discussion focused on advancing strategic projects aimed at reducing gaps in road infrastructure, with special attention given to the Puno–Arequipa route. This route is seen as essential for improving connectivity and competitiveness in southern Peru.

During the meeting, participants reviewed the status of the project “Mejoramiento de la Ruta PE-34C, tramo DV. Chiguata – Santa Lucía,” which is expected to benefit over 12,000 residents. The definitive study for this project is underway and has made progress in engineering, environmental, and archaeological components. The goal is to make execution possible in the short term.

Another key initiative discussed was a service-level conservation project for the Chiguata – Santa Lucía – Yauri corridor. This effort involves an investment of S/ 420 million to ensure adequate transit conditions, road safety, and sustainable maintenance.

The ministry said that aligning technical and operational aspects among national and regional governments as well as involved entities will help optimize execution schedules and strengthen inter-institutional coordination. “El MTC reafirma su compromiso de seguir impulsando inversiones estratégicas en infraestructura de transporte que contribuyan a cerrar brechas, mejorar la calidad de vida de los ciudadanos y promover el desarrollo económico sostenible de la región Puno y del país,” said Aldo Prieto.

According to the official website, the Ministry supports cultural and social wellbeing by improving national connectivity through enhanced transport infrastructure; operates service centers such as MAC Lima Este; regulates Peru’s transport sector; delivers safe infrastructure services; operates under ministerial guidance; serves communities nationwide; manages multimodal approaches with public partnerships; and began operations in 1969.
