The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on Apr. 21 that it has signed an inter-institutional cooperation agreement with the Regional Government of Cusco to support the feasibility study for the Chinchero–Cusco Airport Railway. The agreement was signed by Deputy Minister of Transport Juan del Carmen Haro Muñoz and Cusco regional governor Werner Salcedo Álvarez.
The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration between national and regional authorities in developing transport infrastructure, which is seen as essential for improving connectivity, promoting economic growth, and enhancing quality of life. Haro Muñoz said, “This initiative forms part of the actions promoted by the sector to encourage the development of railway projects in the country, strengthening coordination among different levels of government and contributing to closing gaps in transport infrastructure.”
Under this agreement, both entities will cooperate on technical support, territorial coordination, and information sharing during preparation of the feasibility study. The accord also seeks to facilitate access to relevant data and foster collaboration with local authorities for technical activities, fieldwork, and public engagement linked to the project’s development.
The feasibility study is financed by South Korea through its Official Development Assistance program. A Korean consortium comprising DOHWA Engineering Co. Ltd., Peru branch, and Korea National Railway is responsible for conducting the study under contract from South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
According to preliminary plans outlined in the announcement, the proposed railway would span about 19.5 kilometers between Chinchero city and Cusco city with an estimated investment of USD 987 million covering infrastructure works as well as rolling stock acquisition and management costs. Expected benefits include boosting tourism activity in Cusco region, generating employment opportunities, and improving transportation services.
