The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on Apr. 16 that it is carrying out immediate actions in response to a road emergency in the Áncash region, aiming to maintain safety and transit along the Pasacancha – Sihuas – Huacrachuco highway (route PE-12A).
This intervention is important because it seeks to preserve user safety and regional connectivity after damage was detected at kilometer 158+970, where the Pauluncho bridge—a modular structure measuring 33.53 meters—showed problems with one of its supports due to erosion caused by water seepage from an irrigation canal and persistent rainfall.
The MTC said that maintenance and reinforcement works are underway, including concrete pouring, formwork installation and removal for drainage channels, excavations for structural support, compacted backfilling with local materials, disposal of excess material, as well as ongoing traffic management and road safety measures. These efforts involve technical staff such as supervisors, operators, officials, other collaborators, along with specialized machinery.
Because of these works, vehicle traffic in the area remains restricted during set hours to ensure both user safety and proper progress of repairs.
The Ministry functions as part of Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport and communications policy according to the official website. It manages infrastructure development through multimodal approaches since beginning operations in 1969 according to the official website.
