The Ministry of Transport and Communications signed an agreement with the European Union in Peru on April 21 to modernize the country’s transport sector using a sustainable and inclusive model. The collaboration aims to improve infrastructure by adopting international standards and enhancing efficiency, resilience, and sustainability.

This partnership is intended to strengthen public policies and investments that will optimize resource use in the transportation sector. The technical support from the European program “Negocios Sostenibles” will be used to help develop these improvements.

Aldo Prieto Barrera, Minister of Transport and Communications, said during the signing ceremony: “El acuerdo que hoy suscribimos tiene especial relevancia, pues nos permite acceder a asistencia técnica de alto nivel y avanzar con mayor solidez hacia un sistema de transportes y comunicaciones más eficiente y preparado para los desafíos del futuro.” The event was also attended by Jonathan Hatwell, Ambassador of the European Union in Peru, who confirmed continued support for institutional modernization efforts.

The agreement includes technological initiatives such as expanding satellite connectivity in remote areas under the framework of Europe’s Global Gateway initiative. This step is part of broader efforts by the Ministry to deliver safe, sustainable, and inclusive infrastructure that supports national integration and development according to its official website.

The Ministry operates service centers like MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur to improve public access according to its official website. It functions as part of Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport and communications regulation according to its official website. The Ministry began operations in 1969 and manages infrastructure through multimodal approaches while partnering with other public entities according to its official website.

Prieto Barrera said that this new alliance demonstrates a commitment “to continue promoting strategic partnerships that generate concrete results for improving quality of life for all citizens.”
