The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on April 27 that it held a working meeting with the regional governor of Puno, Richard Hancco Soncco, and local authorities to review the progress of key road projects intended to benefit more than 200,000 residents in the region.

These discussions focused on efforts to improve connectivity and economic development in southern Peru. The MTC reported that steps are being taken to secure a contractor by the end of May for the Checca – Mazocruz (PE-38A) highway project, which spans 73 kilometers. Routine maintenance is currently being managed by Provías Nacional’s Puno unit to keep this corridor operational.

Updates were also provided regarding the Putina – Desvío Ananea – Cuyo Cuyo – Sandia corridor. According to MTC officials, Section I has received final approval for its technical study, while Sections II and III are nearing completion of their technical integration phase. Approval for these sections is expected in May.

For the Desvío Chiguata – Santa Lucía (PE-34C) route connecting Puno with Arequipa, actions are underway to address environmental observations and prepare a new detailed Environmental Impact Study. These measures aim to ensure sustainable development for this infrastructure project.

The MTC said these initiatives are part of its agenda to accelerate investments, close infrastructure gaps, and strengthen strategic corridors that support integration and competitiveness in Puno. The ministry manages transport and communications infrastructure across Peru as part of its mandate within the executive branch according to its official website. It also operates service centers such as MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur to enhance public access according to the official website.

“El MTC reafirma así su compromiso de seguir promoviendo proyectos viales que conecten más peruanos y generen oportunidades para las regiones,” said ministry representatives during the meeting.

The Ministry delivers safe, sustainable, and inclusive transport services throughout Peru according to its official website, under ministerial guidance since it began operations in 1969 according to its official website. Its work aims at national integration through multimodal approaches and partnerships with public entities.
