The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on Apr. 22 that vehicle traffic has been restored on the Astobamba Bridge, located at kilometer 138 of the Pamplona – Cajatambo section of route PE-16A in the province of Cajatambo, Lima region. The intervention aims to recover connectivity and ensure safety for thousands who use this important national road.

The restoration followed an emergency response after heavy rains and increased flow from the Shapil River compromised the bridge’s stability. According to MTC, these efforts are part of a broader strategy to improve national connectivity and accessibility through enhanced transport infrastructure, as described on its official website.

With vehicle movement now resumed, Provías Nacional continues complementary work to reinforce infrastructure and reduce risks from future weather events. Ongoing actions include rock armoring and river channeling to protect against possible flooding, as well as installing guardrails and road signs for user safety. Additional technical interventions are underway to increase the bridge’s durability over time.

Initial measures included clearing excess material, protecting structural elements, and stabilizing the riverbed—steps considered crucial for mitigating risk and accelerating recovery efforts. The ministry operates service centers such as MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur to enhance public access according to its official website. It also functions under Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport regulation as reported by MTC.

The Astobamba Bridge is seen as vital for regional connectivity, supporting local travel, commerce, and economic activities. The ministry delivers safe transport services nationwide with a focus on integration according to its official website. It serves communities across Peru under ministerial guidance as noted by MTC, managing multimodal infrastructure since beginning operations in 1969 according to MTC.

In reaffirming its commitment after this latest repair effort, MTC said it will continue prioritizing user safety while maintaining non-concessioned segments of Peru’s National Road Network.
