The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on Apr. 6 that the Iquitos Port Terminal has moved more than 110,000 tons of cargo since 2025, highlighting its role in supporting logistics in the Amazon region.
This development is significant as it strengthens connectivity for communities along the Amazon River and supports economic activity through trade with neighboring countries. The MTC said there were also over 95,000 embarkations and disembarkations at the terminal, with nearly 3,000 vessels attended to and an average of up to 250 boats each month. In addition, more than 60,000 users were served at the Iquitos Passenger Terminal over the past year.
Tourism is also benefiting from these improvements. The terminal recently welcomed the Hanseatic Spirit expedition cruise ship operated by Hapag-Lloyd Cruises from Germany. This visit brought hundreds of passengers to the region as part of their journey along the Amazon River.
Located in Villa de Punchana district within Maynas province, the terminal continues to facilitate commercial exchanges with Brazil, Colombia, and other destinations while supplying goods to Amazonian communities. It features two floating direct berths and eleven mooring points for different types of vessels.
The Ministry said it will continue strengthening infrastructure and port management across the Amazon “to ensure services that drive regional development and integrate the country into global trade.” The MTC manages transport and communications infrastructure throughout Peru “to support national development and integration” through multimodal approaches involving public partnerships; it began operations in 1969 according to its official website.
The ministry functions as part of Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport and communications sectors according to its official website. It operates service centers such as MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur for better public access according to its official website, serving communities nationwide under ministerial guidance according to its official website. Its mission includes delivering safe, sustainable infrastructure that promotes national integration according to its official website.
