The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on April 17 that it is moving forward with key infrastructure projects in the Cusco region. Vice Minister of Transport Juan del Carmen Haro Muñoz met with regional governor Werner Salcedo Álvarez to discuss updates on major airport and railway initiatives.

These efforts are significant as they aim to improve connectivity for one of Peru’s main tourist destinations, facilitating both passenger and cargo movement. During the meeting, officials highlighted ongoing work at Chinchero International Airport and plans for an agreement to begin a feasibility study for a new railway linking the airport with Cusco city.

The ministry said that this inter-institutional cooperation agreement will help integrate future airport facilities with a modern rail system. The signing ceremony is scheduled for April 21, fulfilling commitments made by the sector to advance projects that support regional competitiveness.

According to the official website, the Ministry of Transport and Communications supports cultural and social wellbeing by improving national connectivity through enhanced transport and communications infrastructure. The ministry also operates service centers such as MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur to improve public access, according to its official website.

The Ministry functions as part of Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport and communications regulations according to its official site, delivering safe, sustainable, and inclusive services aimed at promoting national integration. It serves communities throughout Peru under ministerial guidance as reported by the ministry.

Additionally, the organization began operations in 1969 managing multimodal infrastructure through partnerships with public entities. These current projects reflect ongoing efforts by the ministry to strengthen multimodal transport networks supporting economic growth in regions like Cusco.
