The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) issued on April 1 a set of eight recommendations for drivers to ensure safe travel during the upcoming Holy Week holidays.

These guidelines are aimed at reducing traffic accidents, which, according to the National Road Safety Observatory of the MTC, are most often caused by driver recklessness, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, and performing unauthorized maneuvers.

The MTC advises drivers to check all vehicle documents before traveling. This includes making sure that property cards, mandatory insurance (SOAT), technical inspection certificates, and driving licenses are valid. The ministry also recommends checking road conditions through official applications such as Viaje Seguro from Sutran or the MTC’s own road status viewer due to ongoing landslides affecting several areas.

Drivers are reminded to respect speed limits because higher speeds reduce reaction time and increase accident severity. The ministry highlights that while 95.8 percent of drivers use seat belts in Lima Metropolitana, usage drops significantly among co-drivers and rear passengers. All occupants should wear seat belts at all times.

Other recommendations include ensuring children under 12 use appropriate child restraint systems; avoiding mobile phone use unless with hands-free devices; planning trips to avoid fatigue by alternating drivers or taking breaks; wearing certified helmets when riding motorcycles; and exercising caution in rainy conditions by reducing speed and increasing following distance.

“El Ministerio de Transportes y Comunicaciones recuerda que la prevención y la responsabilidad al conducir son claves para reducir los siniestros de tránsito y proteger la vida de todos en las vías,” said the ministry.
