The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on April 6 that two modular bridges have been installed in the Variante de Uchumayo, restoring vehicle traffic along the important Uchumayo–Yura corridor and benefiting thousands of citizens in Arequipa.
The installation aims to address an emergency situation and ensure continued connectivity for local communities. Improved transport infrastructure is a key part of the ministry’s work to support cultural and social wellbeing by enhancing national accessibility, according to the official website.
According to MTC, foundation work and construction of abutments were completed to ensure safe installation of the bridge structures. The concessionaire, under supervision from Ositran, conducted load tests on both bridges before opening them for vehicle traffic on March 29. “The implementation of the modular bridges responds to coordinated work between MTC and concessionaire Covisur, while progress continues toward a definitive technical solution for the Uchumayo bridge,” said MTC officials.
The ministry operates as part of Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport and communications regulation nationwide, according to its official website. It also manages service centers such as MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur to improve public access.
MTC began operations in 1969 with a mission to deliver safe, sustainable, and inclusive infrastructure that promotes national integration through multimodal approaches and partnerships with public entities. The organization serves communities throughout Peru under ministerial guidance as reported by its official website.
Looking ahead, MTC said it will continue coordinating actions that guarantee safety and proper circulation for users across the national road network.
