The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) held a forum on Apr. 23 titled “Challenges and Opportunities to Close the Digital Gender Gap,” focusing on increasing opportunities for girls and adolescents in technology. The event took place at the MTC auditorium, bringing together sector authorities, international organizations, and leaders from information and communication technology groups.

The forum addressed key challenges in reducing the digital gender gap in Peru, emphasizing the need for more access to technology for young women. Participants discussed how technology can transform lives, particularly by encouraging female role models and creating environments that support digital talent among girls.

Panelists included representatives from organizations such as Dynamic Spectrum Alliance, UNESCO, Laboratoria, Women in Technology Peru, public sector specialists, and tech communities. They agreed on the importance of continued collaboration to increase female participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

During the event, Vice Minister of Communications Raúl García Loli said that over 6.5 million households now have internet access—representing 60.2 percent of all homes—but noted ongoing challenges to ensure more girls benefit from these opportunities. Dalia Suárez, secretary general of MTC said: “Currently, nearly one million girls and adolescents in Peru use the internet for educational purposes; this shows significant potential that must continue to be strengthened through public policies and concrete actions.”

Suárez also highlighted initiatives such as Digital Access Centers which have reached about 50 thousand people with significant participation by girls and women. She added that expanding telecommunications coverage is a priority for reaching historically excluded populations.

The MTC supports cultural and social wellbeing by improving national connectivity through enhanced transport and communications infrastructure according to its official website. The ministry operates service centers like MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur to improve public access according to its official website. It functions as part of Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport and communications according to its official website.

In closing remarks at the event—which called for joint efforts between government agencies, private sector actors, and international partners—participants urged continued work so more Peruvian girls can not only access but lead technological change across the country.
