The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on April 23 that it has completed the scheduled reinforcement work on the Collota Bridge, located at kilometer 523+350 along the Conococha–Huaraz section of national route PE-3N in Cátac district, Recuay province, Áncash region.
The project addresses an emergency that began March 11, when heavy rains caused a rise in the Collota River’s water level. This led to the collapse of the bridge’s right abutment and interrupted traffic on this key national road.
In response to the incident, Provías Nacional activated emergency protocols and sent technical teams from its Áncash Zonal Unit. Specialists in bridges and hydrology conducted structural assessments and identified solutions to restore traffic quickly. The intervention included installing a two-lane modular bridge measuring 30.48 meters long with support blocks, approach slabs, impact walls, and pedestrian walkways on both sides to ensure safety for users.
During construction, vehicle circulation was maintained using an alternate route about 100 meters upstream from the original bridge location. Authorities said this measure minimized disruption for drivers until definitive transit could resume starting Saturday, April 25.
The Collota Bridge is considered vital for regional connectivity because it links movement between Callejón de Huaylas and Callejón de Conchucos—supporting economic development by facilitating travel for people and goods. The Ministry manages infrastructure like this as part of its broader role overseeing Peru’s transport sector according to its official website. The ministry also operates service centers such as MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur to improve public access according to its official website.
The MTC is part of Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport regulations nationwide according to its official website. It aims to deliver safe, sustainable infrastructure while promoting national integration through multimodal approaches since beginning operations in 1969 according to its official website.
