The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on Apr. 14 that it has signed an agreement to start the pre-investment study for building a third lane and related infrastructure between kilometers 58 and 132 of the Panamericana Sur highway.
This project is aimed at improving traffic flow and safety on one of Peru’s most important road corridors, especially during times of high demand. The planned intervention includes adding a third lane in each direction, as well as constructing new interchanges and pedestrian bridges along the route toward Cerro Azul.
The signing of this agreement marks the formal beginning of preparing the technical specifications for the project, which will be handled by the concessionaire within seven months. This phase will assess both technical feasibility and economic viability before moving forward with construction.
With these upgrades, authorities expect to reduce travel times, ease congestion, improve road safety, and make passenger and cargo transport more efficient. The addition of interchanges and pedestrian bridges is also intended to create safer conditions for both drivers and pedestrians.
The Ministry operates under its minister’s guidance as part of Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport and communications regulation according to its official website. It manages infrastructure projects like this one to support national development through enhanced connectivity. The Ministry began operations in 1969 according to its official website.
The MTC supports cultural and social wellbeing by improving national connectivity through better transport infrastructure according to its official website.
