The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on May 5 that the Chinchero International Airport project in Cusco is moving forward with the signing of a contract for the construction of its control tower, which is described as a key component for the safe and efficient operation of the future airport.

According to the ministry, this infrastructure will allow for modern and precise management of air traffic, incorporating advanced technology to ensure high standards of operational safety and an effective response to an expected increase in national and international flights. The development of the control tower is part of broader strategic components intended to establish Cusco as an international tourism and logistics hub, boosting regional economic activity and strengthening Peru’s air connectivity.

The Ministry reaffirmed that Chinchero International Airport remains a priority project for Peru’s development due to its anticipated impact on tourism, job creation, territorial integration, and investment in southern macro-regions. The ministry said it will continue ongoing supervision to ensure compliance with technical standards and project timelines at every stage.

“With these advances, the MTC ratifies its commitment to continue promoting modern and safe airport infrastructure in service of millions of Peruvians and sustainable national development,” according to the statement. The Ministry supports cultural and social wellbeing by improving national connectivity through enhanced transport infrastructure; it operates service centers such as MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur; functions as part of Peru’s executive branch overseeing transport policy; delivers safe, sustainable services; operates under ministerial guidance; and serves communities throughout Peru, according to the official website.

Observers note that continued investment in airport infrastructure could have significant implications for regional growth by supporting tourism flows while also increasing employment opportunities.
