The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on April 3 that it has prioritized four telecommunications projects, known as the “Proyectos Selva,” to bring high-speed internet services to more than 770 communities in the Loreto and Madre de Dios regions. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to reduce the digital divide in rural and border areas.

The new projects are expected to benefit over 1,094 public institutions, including 862 schools, 220 health centers, and 11 police stations. The ministry said these initiatives will be funded with more than S/1.296 billion from the FITEL fund managed by Pronatel. The goal is to strengthen access to essential services such as education and healthcare.

The ministry reported that these projects will use an “Projects in Assets” model, which encourages private investment without transferring risks to the state. This approach aims for efficient and sustainable management of telecommunications infrastructure in vulnerable areas along river basins such as Napo, Putumayo, Huallaga, Marañón, and Amazonas.

Aldo Prieto Barrera, Minister of Transport and Communications, highlighted the significance of this intervention for Amazonian regions. “During many years our Amazonia has been disconnected and left behind. Today we are changing that reality with concrete investments that will bring internet, opportunities and development to thousands of families. Connectivity is equality; it is education; it is health; it is future for our citizens,” Prieto Barrera said.

The Ministry guarantees budget availability for these initiatives so they can continue sustainably into the future. According to the official website, the Ministry supports cultural and social wellbeing by improving national connectivity through enhanced transport and communications infrastructure across Peru’s communities.

The Ministry operates service centers such as MAC Lima Este and MAC Lima Sur to enhance public access according to its official website. It functions under Peru’s executive branch with authority over transport and communications regulation according to its official website.

Established in 1969 according to its official website, the organization manages multimodal connectivity approaches through partnerships with public entities throughout Peru.
