The Ministry of Transport and Communications announced on April 24 that it is moving forward with plans for the Espigón breakwater at the Ilo Port Terminal and making progress on the Moquegua-Ilo highway. The update followed a meeting between Vice Minister of Transport Juan del Carmen Haro Muñoz and Moquegua regional governor Gilia Gutiérrez Ayala.
These initiatives are part of efforts to close infrastructure gaps and boost competitiveness in southern Peru. According to officials, the ministry is working toward signing an agreement with ENAPU for studies and project execution related to the Ilo Port Terminal’s breakwater, prioritizing it within its portfolio of works funded by taxes.
Regarding the Moquegua-Ilo highway, authorities explained that it will be a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction, aiming to improve safety and traffic flow for cargo and passengers. The concessionaire has submitted responses to observations from the first report, which is expected to be approved in May. By year-end, approval of the project’s profile and assignment for technical documentation are anticipated.
