The Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) announced on April 17 that it is intensifying emergency road work in the La Pampilla area, located in the district of Punta de Bombón, Islay province, Arequipa. The project aims to ensure safe transit and improve quality of life for local residents.
This intervention addresses a 0.95-kilometer stretch along Route PE-1SD between Puente Freyre and Punta de Bombón. The work is supervised by the Arequipa Zonal Unit with an investment of S/ 300,000. MTC’s agency Provías Nacional signed an agreement with the District Municipality of Punta de Bombón to address transit problems in this unpaved sector, which has posed safety risks and affected residents’ health due to constant dust emissions.
Currently, the project is reported to be 61% complete. Tasks include clearing debris from the roadway, grading and compacting existing surfaces, placing additional granular material, conducting topographic controls, and performing soil mechanics tests as preparation for reinforced asphalt priming. Heavy machinery such as graders, rollers, water trucks, front loaders and dump trucks are being used to optimize execution time and maintain quality standards.
Once these initial works are finished by Provías Nacional, the municipality will take over placement of asphalt layers and installation of traffic signs according to their agreement.
