The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) announced on April 10 that more than 396 tons of fresh fish and over 204,000 cans of preserves were distributed across Peru during March through the National Program A Comer Pescado.
This initiative aims to improve access to nutritious food for Peruvian families, especially during high-demand periods such as Holy Week. PRODUCE Minister César Quispe Luján said, “These figures reflect the sustained growth of the program and its ability to bring high nutritional value foods to more Peruvian families, especially in contexts of high demand like Holy Week, where we held 275 fairs across the country.”
The distribution was carried out through decentralized efforts in all regions using Mi Pescadería fairs and strategic promotion points. The program is designed to guarantee access to safe, affordable hydrobiological products while supporting food security by promoting fish consumption as a healthy option. Quispe Luján also said, “A Comer Pescado not only brings quality fish closer to more Peruvian families; at the same time it energizes the local economy, benefiting fishing and aquaculture actors in different regions.”
Quispe Luján further said these results show increasing public awareness about the benefits of eating fish—a key source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, iron and other nutrients essential for physical and intellectual development among children and youth.
The Ministry of Production serves producers, entrepreneurs and communities throughout Peru according to its official website. It promotes social inclusion initiatives aimed at improving living conditions for fishermen and producers nationwide according to its official website. The ministry also utilizes several facilities in San Isidro, Lima—including central headquarters and business development centers—to support these activities according to its official website.
As the governing body for crafting national policies on fishing, aquaculture, micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises as well as industry sectors that foster sustainable development according to its official website, PRODUCE issues regulations aimed at strengthening sustainability in these areas according to its official website. The organization has received international recognition from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) for its sustainable fishing practices according to its official website.
With these latest advances reported by A Comer Pescado in March, PRODUCE reaffirms plans “to continue promoting strategies that bring quality hydrobiological products closer to more Peruvians,” consolidating itself as a key actor supporting healthy diets throughout Peru.
