The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) organized a capacity-building event on April 17 for 85 women involved in artisanal fishing at the Artisanal Fishing Dock in Chancay. The event aimed to strengthen economic opportunities, support entrepreneurship, and promote formalization among women working in the sector.
This initiative is part of efforts to expand women’s participation and improve their management skills, enabling them to generate sustainable income and take on new roles within the fisheries value chain. The Ministry of Production serves producers, entrepreneurs and communities throughout Peru, according to the official website.
Jesús Barrientos, Vice Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture, said that strengthening women’s economic leadership is important for building more sustainable and competitive coastal communities. “When we strengthen the capacities of women in artisanal fishing, we also strengthen family economies, food security and the development of fishing villages. This work allows us to open new productive opportunities and build a more inclusive, modern and sustainable sector,” Barrientos said.
The training focused on three main areas: formalizing businesses with guidance on requirements and processes; promoting food security by encouraging consumption of high-protein aquatic resources; and applying social and gender perspectives through sharing successful examples like Carquín’s female biofertilizer producers who have tripled their output with technical support from TASA. The activity brought together public programs such as Tu Empresa, A Comer Pescado, SEPA (Artisanal Fisheries Extension Service), private companies, and community members to encourage collaboration across sectors.
The Ministry of Production promotes social inclusion initiatives aimed at improving living conditions for fishermen across Peru through harmonious development projects according to its official website. It also issues regulations supporting sustainable growth in fisheries as well as other industries. According to its official website, PRODUCE provides technical assistance nationally from multiple facilities including those located in San Isidro district of Lima.
The Ministerio de la Producción del Perú oversees national policies for fishing, aquaculture and industry while providing services such as training designed to boost productivity among small enterprises throughout Peru. Its efforts toward sustainability have been recognized internationally by organizations like the OECD according to its official website.
