The Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) donated 3.3 tons of bonito fish to children and elderly people supported by the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations, according to an April 18 announcement. The donation came after authorities seized the fish during a joint inspection at the Pacheco dock in Callao, which lacks authorization for unloading hydrobiological resources.
This action is significant because it supports food security for vulnerable populations while also addressing illegal fishing activities. Authorities from the Directorate General of Captaincies and Coast Guard (DICAPI) and the National Police participated in the operation. Those involved in the unauthorized unloading abandoned the product when authorities arrived, leading to its immediate confiscation as required by current regulations.
After confirming that the fish was safe for consumption, PRODUCE coordinated with social programs under the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations so that all confiscated goods would benefit children and adolescents at INABIF as well as elderly adults participating in Programa GRATITUD.
“This action not only allows us to sanction illicit activities that affect marine biodiversity but also ensures that high nutritional quality resources reach those who need them most,” said Minister César Quispe Luján.
The Ministry of Production promotes social inclusion and improved living conditions for fishermen and producers across Peru through harmonious development initiatives, according to the official website. It utilizes multiple facilities in San Isidro, Lima, including its central headquarters and centers for business development according to its official website. The ministry is responsible for creating national policies on fishing, aquaculture, micro-, small- and medium-sized enterprises, aiming at sustainable development according to its official website.
Broader implications include reaffirming government commitment against illegal fishing while turning enforcement actions into tangible benefits for nutrition among sensitive populations. Looking ahead, PRODUCE will continue efforts aligned with its mission under ministerial guidance according to its official website, issuing regulations aimed at strengthening sustainable practices within Peru’s fishing industry.
