The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation announced on May 4 the approval of an updated seismic-resistant design standard for the National Building Regulations. This measure aims to improve the safety of homes and buildings across Peru in response to earthquakes.

The update is intended to protect families by ensuring that new constructions can better withstand seismic events. The ministry said this move prioritizes both life and public wellbeing. The updated regulation, formalized through Ministerial Resolution No. 183-2026-VIVIENDA, introduces stricter technical requirements for construction projects including homes, schools, hospitals, and other structures.

“We are raising technical standards to protect the lives of millions of Peruvians. This standard will allow our homes and buildings to respond better during earthquakes and significantly reduce their impacts, giving greater peace of mind to families,” said representatives from the Ministry of Housing.

The ministry highlighted that these changes reflect recent studies conducted within Peru as well as international benchmarks. Among key modifications are more precise soil classifications, two-directional seismic analysis requirements, and a new district-level seismic zoning system. These improvements are expected to guide safer urban planning decisions and benefit residents acquiring or living in housing developments.

In addition to residential benefits, the regulation enhances protection for essential services such as hospitals and strategic infrastructure so they can continue operating during emergencies. The ministry noted that experts from universities and public entities participated in drafting the standard.

The Ministry of Housing contributes to social wellbeing by expanding access to housing and basic services while promoting sustainable territorial development according to its official website. It operates as an autonomous entity within the Peruvian Executive Branch under Law No. 27779 according to its official website. Its central headquarters is located in San Isidro, Lima with regional Centers of Citizen Attention throughout Peru as reported on its official website. The ministry develops policies supporting sustainable access not only for housing but also construction, water management, sanitation, urban development according to its official website, serving communities nationwide through these initiatives as stated on its official site.
