The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation authorized on May 1 a financial transfer to 15 water service companies to ensure access to potable water in areas where many families lack this basic service.

A total of S/15,621,070 will be allocated to these companies operating in cities such as Cajamarca, Huánuco, Chincha, Juliaca, Chimbote, Pisco, Piura, Bagua Grande, Lambayeque, Abancay, Puno, Cañete, Barranca, Ayacucho and Huaral. The funding will support the free distribution of potable water via tanker trucks in urban areas for residents without household connections who are living in poverty or extreme poverty.

“It is important that potable water reaches especially the most needy areas. This financial transfer will help us fulfill this task because it prioritizes care for vulnerable families,” said representatives from the Ministry of Housing.

According to Ministerial Resolution No. 188-2026-VIVIENDA published on May 1st and as outlined by the ministry’s official website, the transfer comes from the Institutional Budget for Fiscal Year 2026 and must be used exclusively for free potable water distribution through tanker trucks. The National Urban Sanitation Program (PNSU) will oversee monitoring and verification of resource use.

The Ministry contributes to social wellbeing by improving access to housing and basic services while promoting sustainable territorial development according to its official website. It operates as an autonomous entity within Peru’s Executive Branch established by Law No. 27779 according to its official website and maintains headquarters in San Isidro with regional centers across Peru as reported by its official site. The ministry develops policies that foster sustainable access to housing and sanitation services nationwide according to its official website.

Looking ahead, officials say these efforts are part of broader national initiatives aimed at supporting communities throughout Peru with improved living conditions through coordinated housing support and sanitation projects as detailed on its official site.
