The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation announced on April 2 that it is carrying out cleaning and desilting work in the Caplina River, located in the district of Pachia. The initiative aims to prevent river overflows and protect the lives and safety of more than two thousand people exposed to heavy rains.
The intervention covers a stretch of 0.69 kilometers in the Balnearios and Bocatoma Calientes sectors, where more than 14,000 cubic meters of accumulated material obstructing the natural flow will be removed. This measure is expected to restore water flow and reduce flood risks for vulnerable areas.
These activities are part of the national campaign “La prevención nos une,” which seeks to anticipate emergencies and mitigate their impacts. In early 2026 alone, nine interventions have been carried out in Tacna province, focusing on critical points identified for their high exposure to climatic events.
Of these efforts, five targeted cleaning and desilting works along rivers Sama, Seco Uchusuma, Caplina, and Uchusuma. In total, 30,010 cubic meters of sediment were removed from a combined length of 1.3 kilometers—benefiting an estimated 2,712 residents. Additionally, work at Bocatoma Chuschuco-I stage covered another 0.15 kilometers with protection extended to about 10,000 people.
Other measures include improving road conditions along Las Yaras–Vila Vila and Valle Viejo (10 kilometers), benefiting around 749 residents; as well as distributing potable water within parts of Sama district for over one thousand individuals lacking basic access.
Looking ahead, new interventions are planned across several districts including Tacna city itself as well as Calana, Inclán, Pachia, Sama, Locumba and Palca—all aimed at strengthening preparedness against future heavy rainfall events.
