The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation announced on March 18 that it is strengthening partnerships with private companies to encourage the reuse of treated wastewater in productive activities. The announcement was made during the virtual forum “Opportunities for the Business Sector in the Roadmap towards a Circular Economy in Drinking Water and Sanitation by 2030.”
This initiative aims to prioritize potable water for human consumption while promoting alternative sources for industrial use. The ministry said that circular economy practices in water and sanitation can help businesses operate more efficiently and sustainably.
During the event, officials highlighted opportunities such as using sludge from wastewater treatment plants as soil enhancers or fertilizers under certain conditions. The ministry also outlined actions including recognizing entities that adopt circular economy practices, developing technical and regulatory tools, and participating in technical working groups with public institutions, private companies, academia, and international organizations to foster investment agreements under this approach.
The forum introduced procedures for signing Voluntary Agreements for adopting eco-efficiency, circularity, and good environmental practices. This mechanism recognizes institutions and companies that incorporate sustainability criteria into their production processes.
More than 250 participants attended the event, including representatives from private companies, associations, and professionals interested in sustainable water management. The event was organized by the General Directorate of Environmental Affairs of the ministry together with ADEX as part of the Commission for a Circular Economy in Drinking Water and Sanitation (CECAS).
Several success stories were presented at the forum. Danper, an agro-industrial company operating in Trujillo, shared its experience implementing water treatment and reuse systems to optimize water use in agricultural production aimed at export markets. UNACEM Perú S.A., from the cement industry sector, described how its wastewater treatment plants at Atocongo and Condorcocha allow treated water to be reused for green area irrigation and fire prevention systems. Textil del Valle discussed its adoption of technologies for treating and reusing water in textile processes to reduce industry water footprints.
