The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation delivered new Wasiymi rural homes to 86 families in the district of Vilca, Huancavelica, benefiting a total of 344 people in vulnerable situations, according to an April 1 announcement. The initiative comes as low temperatures approach the high Andean areas.
The project aims to provide safe and warm housing for communities affected by extreme cold, particularly children, older adults, and low-income families. The new houses were built in the rural population centers of Casa Blanca, Santa Ana, León Pampa, Riego Pampa, Tambo Pampa and Campo Alegre.
These bioclimatic and earthquake-resistant houses have an area of 44 square meters. They include features such as a buffer area that reduces cold air entering the home, a dining room, multipurpose space and two bedrooms. The ministry said that more than S/5 million was invested in this effort.
A key part of the program is that beneficiary families organized themselves into executive groups to manage and execute resources for construction. This approach is intended to strengthen local capacities and promote community organization.
“We are providing dignified, healthy and warm spaces that allow families to live better, protect their health and develop under safe conditions against low temperatures,” said the Vice Minister of Housing and Urbanism during a symbolic handover ceremony with local authorities.
Looking ahead to 2026, the sector plans to build another 289 Wasiymi homes in Huancavelica with an investment exceeding S/17 million. This would benefit more than one thousand residents living in areas exposed to cold weather. Between 2015 and 2025, the ministry constructed a total of 5,468 rural homes through its National Rural Housing Program in Huancavelica region.
