The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation announced on May 6 that it is reinforcing preventive efforts against floods and overflows in the Lima region by deploying heavy machinery to critical areas. The ministry reported that it has carried out 36 interventions as part of the “La Prevención Nos Une” campaign, working together with local governments.

These actions are significant because they aim to reduce risks for communities vulnerable to flooding and improve their safety during the rainy season. The Program Nuestras Ciudades led cleaning, desilting, channeling, and dike construction across more than 17 kilometers of rivers and ravines in districts such as Ate, Calango, Chaclacayo, Chilca, Cieneguilla, Comas, Chosica, Mala, San Mateo de Otao and Santa Rosa de Quives. In these locations over 304 thousand cubic meters of excess material—including weeds, rocks and mud—were removed to restore water flow. These measures directly benefit more than 17 thousand residents.

“Un desborde o inundación pueden sorprendernos en cualquier momento. Por eso es importante estar alertas y reforzar los trabajos de prevención que venimos cumpliendo como una promesa del sector,” said the Minister of Housing.

Additionally, road improvement works were conducted along more than five kilometers in Picamarán I and II sectors in Allauca district (Yauyos province), removing nearly nine thousand cubic meters of debris for the benefit of about two thousand residents. Current operations continue in Aucampi population center (Allauca district), where over six kilometers are being improved to further reduce risks for another four hundred fifty people ahead of expected rains.

Looking ahead, planned activities include further clean-up and flood prevention measures in Santa Rosa de Quives, Lurigancho and Cieneguilla districts—targeting centers like Macas and Cuatro de Abril—with a goal to remove an additional eighty-two thousand cubic meters of material for the protection of over twenty-three thousand residents.

The Ministry operates through nineteen basic operational units nationwide to ensure timely support across Peru. Its role includes developing policies for sustainable access to housing services throughout Peruvians’ communities according to the official website.
