The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation announced on March 27 that it is continuing its efforts to prevent possible flooding and overflows in the Piura region. The ministry said these actions are part of the campaign “La prevención nos une” and involve cleaning and clearing riverbeds, ravines, and drains using heavy machinery.
This initiative aims to reduce the impact of heavy rains by targeting areas most at risk. Through the Nuestras Ciudades Program, five interventions are underway in districts including Castilla, Veintiséis de Octubre, Paimas, Sicchez, and Chulucanas. These works are expected to protect more than 21,000 residents.
The ministry also reported ongoing support for areas affected by landslides caused by intense rainfall in Ayabaca and El Carmen de La Frontera districts. Improvements to access roads have benefited over 3,000 people there. In addition, potable water has been supplied free of charge to more than 4,000 residents in Canchaque district; nearly 450,000 liters have been distributed so far with a tanker truck.
During this year alone, four cleaning interventions have taken place across Piura province’s ravines and drains. A total of over 44,200 cubic meters of sediment was removed along an 8.64-kilometer stretch—benefiting around 42,800 people. Fourteen road improvement projects were completed in Ayabaca, Huancabamba, Morropón and Talara provinces as well; these cleared nearly 77,000 cubic meters from pedestrian routes covering about 29 kilometers for the benefit of more than 61,000 inhabitants.
Six additional road improvements were carried out after heavy rains impacted Talara province: two projects took place in Los Órganos district (removing about 4,530 cubic meters along just over five kilometers for some 5,170 people), while four projects were completed in Máncora district (removing roughly 7,600 cubic meters along about one-and-a-half kilometers for approximately 2,440 residents).
The ministry said these actions respond to requests from local authorities at various levels who can contact officials via email or telephone for further coordination.
