The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation announced on May 2 a new project valued at approximately S/808 million to expand and improve potable water and sanitation services in the city of Puno. The announcement came during a meeting with local authorities, municipal officials, representatives from EPS EMSA Puno, and members of the Committee for Oversight of Agreement 025.
The project aims to benefit more than 154,000 people in Puno by enhancing access to clean water and basic sanitation. Funding will come from a loan agreement between the Peruvian government and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development. The ministry said this initiative is part of ongoing efforts to close gaps in basic service provision across Peru.
“This megaproject will allow us to drastically reduce the gap in potable water and sanitation in the region of Puno. We are going to improve people’s health, their wellbeing, quality of life, and above all give future generations a more optimistic future,” said officials from the Ministry of Housing.
During the meeting, participants reviewed key milestones already achieved under Agreement 025 as well as immediate steps needed before execution begins. Operational management has included approval of an Operations Manual and Annual Operating Plan; technical preparations have started with consultancies using Building Information Modeling methodology; socially, a communication strategy is being developed for community engagement.
Authorities present reaffirmed their commitment to prioritize strategic complementary projects that could accelerate progress for residents. According to information from the official website, the ministry develops policies that promote sustainable access to housing, construction, water supply, sanitation services and urban development throughout Peru. It operates as an autonomous entity within Peru’s Executive Branch established by Law No. 27779 according to its official website.
The ministry’s headquarters are located in San Isidro, Lima but it also maintains regional Centers of Citizen Attention across Peru as noted on its official website. Its work supports communities nationwide through policy-making aimed at fostering sustainable territorial development according to its official website. “With this intervention,” officials added during the session, “the Ministry reaffirms its commitment through the National Urban Sanitation Program (PNSU) toward closing gaps in access to basic services while promoting sustainable development and public health.”
