The Ministry of Housing, Construction and Sanitation announced on May 4 that it is carrying out a large-scale water and sanitation infrastructure project in the district of Chala, province of Caravelí, Arequipa. The initiative, executed through the National Urban Sanitation Program, is one of the most significant projects in southern Peru with an investment exceeding S/ 200 million.
The project aims to improve access to basic services for over 25,000 residents in Chala. Access to reliable water and sanitation is seen as vital for social wellbeing and sustainable development across Peru, according to the Ministry’s official website official website.
Minister Wilder Sifuentes Quilcate said: “Estamos trabajando para que cada día más peruanas y peruanos puedan acceder a servicios básicos de calidad. Reducir la brecha nos permitirá impulsar también el desarrollo de Chala y de la región Arequipa.”
Currently, construction progress stands at 64.45%. The drinking water component includes new intake works, a treatment plant using reverse osmosis technology, reservoirs, distribution networks, installation of 2,541 new household connections and rehabilitation of another 369 connections. For wastewater management, there will be new collector networks and pumping stations along with the installation or rehabilitation of more than 3,100 sewerage connections.
A wastewater treatment plant using RAFA technology will also be built as part of this intervention. The Ministry develops policies that promote sustainable access to housing and urban services nationwide according to its official site. It operates from its headquarters in San Isidro (Lima) as well as regional centers across Peru as noted by the ministry.
The Ministry functions autonomously within the Peruvian Executive Branch under Law No. 27779 according to government records. It issues policies supporting sustainable development in areas such as housing and water management as described on its website.
