The Ministry of Health warned on April 9 about the dangers associated with self-medication, a common practice that can lead to health complications and delay timely diagnosis of diseases.
This issue is important because using medications without professional supervision may cause adverse reactions, dangerous drug interactions, poisoning, or mask serious illnesses. Such practices can make it harder for doctors to identify underlying conditions early.
Manuel Jesús Muñoz Jáuregui, a specialist at Hospital Dos de Mayo, said: “Self-medication has multiple risks. It can generate adverse reactions, dangerous interactions between medications, intoxication or even mask serious diseases, delaying their diagnosis.”
Muñoz Jáuregui advised the public not to use medicines without professional guidance or reuse old prescriptions. He said: “Medications should not be used without professional guidance nor should old prescriptions be reused. It is important to always consult a doctor and avoid using antibiotics without prescription.”
He also stressed the importance of seeking immediate care at a health facility if experiencing symptoms such as persistent fever for more than two or three days, intense pain or difficulty breathing.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to promoting responsible medication use and protecting public health through prevention efforts and timely information.
